SELF-CATERING BARGE HOLIDAY IN FRANCE ON BARGE "M" - CATERING DETAILS
Any holiday in France always involves food! You're in the gastronomic capital of Europe and you'll find that the food you buy, prepare and cook tastes so much better here!
Naturally you'll also want to try one of the many local restaurants which are either on the Canal, or very close to it in one of the many canalside villages.

WHY GO SELF-CATERING?
Good question. It means you will be cooking! It means you will be washing up! It means you will have to do a little planning. However, what makes it so special is that you’re in France on a canal, steeped in history and intrigue, and you will enjoy the whole experience.
On arrival you will be given a welcome pack with the basics to get you started. Then the Captain's wife will take you to the local supermarket to allow you to stock up on your supplies.
Your mornings will possibly start with a stroll to the local Boulangerie to collect the baguettes and croissants for the day. This is a fascinating must.
Most of France goes out in the morning to collect their bread for the day. Wonderful aromas of the freshly baked bread lures you to the shop. It is also an excellent opportunity to practice your French! Then return to the boat and have a typically French continental breakfast on deck.

Once cruising you can buy more supplies along the route. Most of the villages you will pass though have shops and a Cave (local co-operative wine producers).
There are plenty of shops along the Canal as well as a floating barge shop selling bread and souvenirs at Le Somail. Most villages have markets selling local produce at least once a week.
The array of produce is excellent. From livestock to massive Blewit mushrooms. You will probably end up spending more time here than you planned!
The wine sold here is amazing value because you are buying the wine at the point of production. Wine can cost as little as €1.20 a litre.
Barge "M" is a well equipped self catering barge laid out for our guests to either cook in the fully-fitted galley or fire up the gas BBQ on deck.

THE GALLEY
A well equipped kitchen with good working area. There's a 4-ring gas hob and gas oven and grill. The fridge has a small freezer compartment and a small drinks fridge. They are compact but ample for the needs of most as you'll be topping up when you leave the barge regularly.
There are plenty of cooking utensils and pots and pans for you to use to create a wonderful meal. Also in the kitchen area there is an extendable dining table that can comfortably seat six.
BBQ
There's a fitted gas barbecue on deck. No holiday is complete with out burning a steak or two on the barbie! On a warm summer's night there is nothing quite like sitting on deck watching the sun go down with a drink, and the smell of a good barbecue.
For Vegetarians on board, the crew can supply a disposable unit to sit over the existing one.
Please let us know in advance if you require a throw-away BBQ.

You will be cruising in the real South of France, known as 'Le Midi'. We're so lucky living in this part of Europe because we have easy access to fresh fruit and vegetables all year round. The selection of fish, meats, charcuterie, and cheeses is second to none. During your canal cruise holiday you'll have a chance to sample all the delicious flavours, whether you cook yourselves or whether you go to the many local restaurants!
