FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Which months and on which days do the cruises operate?
Every day from late March to mid-October. At other times cruises only operate if booked in advance.
  • Do we need to make a reservation in advance?
The answer is generally yes, except for the 1-hour Discovery Cruises. Adagio is popular! We take last minute reservations if we have room, so it's always worth contacting us. However if you can give a little notice you'll get more choice.
If possible, please state alternative dates when you make a reservation enquiry.
  • What about the 1 Hour Discovery Cruises?
If you're a group of 4+ people you can book in advance and this is recommended. If you're less than 4 people, advance bookings for 1-hour cruises are not possible - simply arrive on the day and pay at the boat.
  • Can we sit outside?
Yes, there is space for 6 people to sit on the forward deck and there is a sun umbrella. Inside there's additional seating for 8 people. So there's total seating for 14 people but we restrict numbers to 12.
  • Do we have to sit in allocated seats?
No, you can sit where you like and it's "first come, first served". The boat is very stable and the Captain encourages people to swap places during cruises for those who would like to spend time on deck.
  • Is there a WC?
Boat WC's are small and are generally not recommended! However there are WCs at the villages the boat stops at and you will never cruise for more than 2 hours without a stop.
  • Is it easy to board the boat?
Yes, there is a short ramp from the canalside onto the boat, where there is then a step down to the deck. We regret that the boat is not yet equipped for wheelchair access.
  • What will we see on our cruise?
You'll see lovely scenery, little villages, wildlife, old architecture and many other things, depending on which cruise you take.

We ask you to understand that we receive so many enquiries per day that we can't answer individual questions about exactly what you'll see or where you'll go, but you can read about each cruise on the previous page. This depends on the cruise and on the day. Adagio cruises the nicest parts of the Canal so wherever she goes you'll love it!
  • Do the cruises depend on the weather?
The cruises take place even if it rains. Of course, in this part of the world it's sunny for over 300 days a year. The one weather factor which can affect the cruises (very rare) is very strong winds.
  • Can we take our own food and drink?
Please note that it's not permitted to consume your own food and drink on the boat.
  • For the lunch / dinner / 6 hour day-trip cruise, where and what will we eat?
A typical local restaurant, serving typical fresh French food. It will be the type of restaurant which we eat at ourselves, so you should enjoy it!

The price for restaurant lunch and dinner cruises includes a daily set menu, which we will not know in advance - the menus vary every day. You can of course order extra items and pay for them yourselves. It is possible to specify a vegetarian meal. Special dietary needs and preferences are subject to a small surcharge.

Please note that your captain makes no money from any restaurant, so you know her choice of restaurants is genuine. Please also note that the food is better than if she served reheated lunch or dinner on the boat!
  • For the Picnic Lunch cruise, where will we eat our picnic?
Your Captain will stop at a village where you can disembark and find a place you like. Or she can stop in a rural location if you prefer. As stated above, it is not permitted to consume your own food and drink while you are on the boat.
  • Who else will be on the cruise?
Up to 12 people can do each trip - and they will probably be people like you. We find that clients who choose to do a Canal du Midi day-trip are always very nice people!
  • Is there a commentary?
Yes, your Captain provides a commentary in English and French from time to time during your cruise. She will tell you about the history of the Canal and life here generally.
  • How do we find the boat?
Please see the Maps page. After you have made a booking, we'll send you detailed directions and advice for the day.
  • Can you organise a taxi to and from our hotel / B&B / villa?
Generally your accommodation owners can book a local taxi for you. Sometimes we can do this but only for groups of 6+ people. If you're a group please tell us where you're staying we'll try to get a price for you.
  • Is there free parking where we pick up the boat?
    Yes.
  • Are children welcome and is there a reduced price for them?
    Yes, of course they're welcome!

If you've chosen a cruise which includes a restaurant lunch or dinner, there is a €5 euro reduction for children under 12 years old and they will get the children's menu. For other cruises unfortunately there is no reduced price for children because they take up one of the 12 licensed places on the boat, so you have to pay the same price as for an adult.
  • Can we bring our dog and is there a price for him?
    Yes, dogs are welcome.

There is a €5 euro supplement per dog and we must be told in advance if you want to bring your dog. Obviously they must be very well behaved and you must guarantee that they will not disturb other passengers in any way.
  • Do we need to bring anything or wear special clothes?
No, please come as you are.
  • Can we start at a different time / do a longer cruise?
We can sometimes vary the standard cruises if you are a group - or if you're a couple and you’re prepared to pay to privatise the entire boat just for yourselves. There is more information below.  If not, please choose a standard cruise.
  • Can we do a one-way trip?
Yes. There's a supplement and naturally you have to book this well in advance. You will also need to 'privatise' the boat, which means booking 10 places even if you are two people. The standard cruises are all return trips. The return journey always surprises people, because everything looks different on the way back. However if you want to do a one-way cruise you can.
  • Can we privatise the boat for one of the standard cruises?
Yes, if you would like the boat entirely to yourselves this is possible. The Captain can privatise the boat for you and it costs the equivalent of 10 passengers for that particular type of cruise.

With a privatised trip your Captain will do her best to accommodate any particular wishes, like stopping where you want (provided that it's permitted) and other personalisation.
  • Can we rent the boat for the day and do what we want?
Yes, you can rent (charter) Adagio for 3 to 7 hours. Licencing regulations mean that you must have a Captain, but Adagio will effectively be yours for the time period you select.
